The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the Animal Grazing Regulation and Cattle Ranch Establishment Law, 2020, warning herders and cattle owners that violations will attract stiff penalties, including imprisonment and forfeiture of livestock.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued Tuesday by Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government said the reminder was necessary following rising incidents of traffic obstruction and unlawful open grazing activities across the state.

Akinmade expressed concern over the persistent breach of the anti-grazing law by some herders, emphasizing that the government would no longer tolerate such disregard for public safety and order.

He noted that the law, which was enacted in 2021, prohibits open grazing and prescribes a minimum of three years’ imprisonment without an option of fine for violators. Offenders also risk forfeiting their herds to the state.

“The government has observed recurring incidents involving the obstruction of roads, destruction of crops, and encroachment on private farmlands by herders, all of which violate an existing law and will no longer be overlooked,” Akinmade stated.

“For clarity, anyone caught rearing or grazing livestock outside designated ranches faces not less than three years in prison and the forfeiture of the animals involved. The law is still very much in force and will be implemented without hesitation,” he warned.

While assuring that herders and cattle owners remain welcome in Ogun State, Akinmade stressed that operations must align strictly with the law. He added that no individual or group would be allowed to disrupt public order, encroach on private property, or threaten peace under the guise of grazing.

“Open grazing remains banned in Ogun State. Anyone found violating this law will be apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” he concluded.

“Our advice to road users, especially indigenes, is to protect the road from destruction. Let nobody come and destroy it or burn tyres in the name of celebration,” he said.

Omonowo said the Aba–Azumini highway was previously in a very bad condition before FERMA intervened, describing it as a death trap for commuters and residents.

He also expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the project, adding that drainage structures such as catch pits would help prevent flooding and extend the lifespan of the road.

According to him, the highway serves as a major link between Aba, several Abia communities, and Cross River State, carrying heavy traffic daily.

He urged local construction firms to improve on quality delivery to compete effectively with foreign contractors.

Meanwhile, the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer in Abia State, Festus Okafor, said FERMA workers have not faced harassment or violence from residents during operations in the state.
