Generation Shift? Labour Party Youth Leader Launches Presidential Bid
The National Youth Leader of the Labour Party (LP), Kennedy Ahanotu, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, becoming the first aspirant within the party to publicly enter the race.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ahanotu made his declaration during an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday, stating that Nigeria needs a “fresh start” anchored on institutional reforms, patriotism, and meritocracy.
According to the 41-year-old youth leader, the country is long overdue for a generational shift and a decisive break from the entrenched political order that has dominated national leadership for decades.
“I am contesting for the highest office in the land to offer Nigeria and Nigerians a fresh start rooted in deep institutional transformation. We must hit the industrial reset button and rebuild a sustainable democracy that works for all,” Ahanotu said.
He referenced Nigeria’s historical leadership trajectory, pointing out that many post-independence figures assumed power in their youth—including General Yakubu Gowon, who became Head of State at the age of 29.
“Every man is born for a purpose. I believe I carry the burden of transformational leadership. There’s no better time to pursue that vision than now,” he said.
While acknowledging that he is older than some of Nigeria’s early leaders were when they rose to power, Ahanotu emphasized that he is morally, intellectually, emotionally, and constitutionally fit to be the country’s next president.
When asked whether he would step down from his current position as LP National Youth Leader in light of his presidential ambition, Ahanotu noted that there is no constitutional obligation to do so. However, he suggested he would relinquish the role at the appropriate time.
“The party constitution does not require me to resign in order to run for office. That said, I am willing to step aside when necessary because I see a higher calling in leading Nigeria as president,” he explained.
Addressing the possibility of the party leadership under Julius Abure backing another candidate, Ahanotu affirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and its internal democratic processes.
“Until that situation arises, I won’t speculate. But as a loyal party man, I am bound by the constitution and decisions of the party. It is wise to respect well-grounded institutional directives,” he concluded.
