Royal Goodbye: Olubadan to Be Laid to Rest August 8 in Grand Ceremony

The Olakulehin Royal Family on Tuesday unveiled the funeral arrangements and farewell events for the late 43rd Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

PUNCH Online earlier reported that Oba Olakulehin passed away at the age of 90 on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

According to a statement issued by his eldest son, Olasunmbo Olakulehin, the late monarch will receive a state burial on Friday, August 8, 2025. The ceremony, approved by Governor Seyi Makinde, will include a church service and interment at the Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo, Ibadan, starting at 10 a.m.

Olasunmbo noted that the burial will be preceded by a series of events, some of which were rescheduled in observance of the 21-day mourning period for the revered king.

The activities will commence on Sunday, August 3, 2025, with the semi-final matches of the Olubadan Olakulehin Football Cup at Bishop Philips Academy Stadium, Ibadan, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The statement further detailed that the preliminaries of the Olakulehin Table Tennis Tournament will be held at the Lekan Salami Indoor Sports Hall, Adamasingba, on Monday, August 4, at 10 a.m.

On Tuesday, August 5, the third-place match of the football tournament will take place at Olubadan Stadium at 2 p.m., followed by the final match at 4 p.m.

The finals of the Table Tennis Tournament are slated for Wednesday, August 6, marking the conclusion of the sporting events initially meant to celebrate the monarch’s 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary.

Before the final burial, Oba Olakulehin’s body will lie in state during an interfaith service at Mapo Hall on Thursday, August 7, at 10 a.m., followed by a Christian wake at the Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, at 3 p.m.

The funeral rites will conclude with a family thanksgiving service at the Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo, on Sunday, August 10, at 10 a.m.

The family expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Makinde, the Olubadan-in-Council, religious and traditional leaders, politicians, business executives, corporate bodies, Ibadan groups, professional associations, residents, and Nigerians at large for their condolences, visits, and support during their time of grief.

News reports that the incident, which occurred on April 9, 2026, claimed the lives of the senior officer and several other soldiers.

A family source told Vanguard that the General was speaking with his identical twin brother, who resides in the United Kingdom, at the time of the attack.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
