From Prestige to Peril: Benin GRA Roads Become Commuters’ Worst Nightmare

Published

on

Motorists and commuters navigating the Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Benin City, Edo State, are expressing deep frustration over the worsening condition of roads in the area.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

With the rainy season at its peak and most streets lacking proper drainage systems, numerous roads are riddled with potholes, while others transform into large pools of stagnant water after heavy rainfall.

The situation has been exacerbated by increased traffic through the GRA, as commercial drivers now use it as an alternative route to avoid severely damaged portions of the Benin-Sapele Road. Many now detour via Country Home Road to link Sapele Road, further burdening already fragile roads in the GRA.

A survey of the area on Tuesday revealed widespread infrastructural decay. Boundary Road leading to Adesuwa Road and the airport becomes heavily flooded with every rainfall, often taking up to three or four days for the water to subside. Ihama Road is similarly affected and nearly impassable near the Adesuwa junction, while Akhionbare Road faces the same fate.

The scenario is no different along Giwa Amu Road from the Airport Road end and Gapiona Road, where floodwaters have created artificial lakes, forcing motorists to cautiously wade through treacherous waterlogged sections.

Roads around Commercial Avenue—including the vicinity of the Deputy Governor’s official lodge—as well as Golf Road by the 4th Brigade Headquarters, Aiguobaswin Crescent, and adjoining streets are also in a deplorable state. They are consistently riddled with potholes and become virtually impassable after rainfall.

Even Reservation Road, which leads directly to Osadebey Avenue and the Edo State Government House, suffers from recurring flooding, despite recent palliative works.

A commercial driver named Paul described the situation as dire:

“We have no choice but to use the GRA. Sapele Road’s Adesuwa and Limit Road junctions are so bad that if we continue using them, we’ll spend all our earnings on vehicle repairs.”

Another motorist, Osaro Osagie, said the condition of the roads has become a public disgrace.

“The rain has exposed the real state of the GRA. Even the road leading to the governor’s house is no longer motorable toward the Ikpokpan axis. The sloped section retains water, and past administrations’ efforts to fix it have failed. Hopefully, this government will find a lasting solution.”

He added that what should be a 20- to 30-minute journey now takes over an hour due to the deteriorated infrastructure.

Responding to the situation, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Paul Ohonbamu, assured the public that the state government is committed to a comprehensive overhaul of the roads and drainage systems in the GRA.

He warned against rushing into temporary repairs without addressing the root causes of flooding and structural decay.

“Governor Okpebholo will not approve any haphazard interventions. When it’s done, it must be done right. The approach will be holistic,” Ohonbamu said.

Factional Crisis Rocks ADC In Akwa Ibom As Party Splits Deepen.

Published

on

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
