Wild Secrets of a Powerful Man: Python, Rare Animals Moved From Ex-Kano AGF’s Residence to Zoo

The Managing Director of Kano Zoological Garden, Sadik Kura Muhammad, confirmed that the escaped python — along with other wild animals, including a crocodile and a lion cub — had been safely recovered and relocated to the Kano Zoo.
Local residents had raised the alarm following the snake’s escape, which caused days of unease and anxiety in the affected communities. Calm was restored only after authorities confirmed that all the animals had been captured and removed from the premises.
In a radio interview, the zoo director said swift action was taken after the situation came to light, adding that Idris willingly handed over the animals in his possession to the state government.
“There is a legal framework — the Wild Animal Law — which allows individuals to keep specific wild animals under regulated conditions,” Muhammad explained. “This includes both endangered and non-endangered species. However, animals like parrots and vultures that are at risk of extinction must be kept in controlled environments like zoos for preservation purposes.”
He emphasized that anyone keeping such animals must obtain a license, provide appropriate housing, ensure proper feeding, and meet strict safety standards.
“I verified that Mr. Idris had a valid license and that the lion was still a cub — not yet dangerous,” he noted. “But licenses are renewed yearly, and once any animal reaches a potentially threatening stage, it must be relocated to the zoo.”
He added that public complaints influenced the decision: “Though the animals weren’t dangerous at the time, the concerns of neighbours led the former AGF to voluntarily surrender them. We evacuated them safely, at night, to avoid any further alarm.”
Muhammad assured residents that there is no threat to public safety and that the animals are now securely housed at the state zoo.
