Strike Alert! Lagos Hospitals Disrupted as Doctors Protest Unjust Deductions

Medical doctors under the employment of the Lagos State Government have commenced a three-day warning strike starting 8 a.m. today, Monday, July 28, in protest against what they described as unjust and unilateral salary deductions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The announcement was made at a press conference held by the Medical Guild of Lagos State at its secretariat, where the Guild’s chairman, Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, strongly condemned the deductions, labeling them as “unauthorised and unilateral cuts” from doctors’ wages.

According to Olugbogi, the dispute dates back to April 2025, when the Lagos State Government allegedly deducted portions of medical and dental practitioners’ salaries without prior consultation or notice. The move sparked widespread outrage and was temporarily halted following what he described as “intense engagement and strategic intervention” by the Guild.

This intervention led to the creation of a six-member conciliation committee, equally representing both the Guild and the government, to deliberate on the matter.

“We presented all necessary documents detailing how the CONMESS salary structure should be applied, and it was agreed that the government would maintain the status quo while conducting internal reviews,” Olugbogi explained.

However, he expressed disappointment that despite the understanding reached, the Lagos State Treasury Office resumed the deductions in July—an act he described as a “clear breach of trust.”

Olugbogi revealed that although many doctors had called for an immediate strike following the renewed deductions, the Guild initially chose to pursue diplomacy.

“But the July deduction has left us with no choice. This is more than a violation—it’s a betrayal,” he declared.

The Guild stated that the strike would last through Thursday, July 31, unless the government meets their demands. Among those demands is the full payment of 12 months’ revised CONMESS arrears owed to honorary consultants at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

In addition, the Guild has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government, warning that failure to meet their demands will result in an indefinite, full-scale industrial action.

Speaking on the economic realities faced by medical professionals in Lagos, Olugbogi lamented, “The most senior doctor under Lagos State employment does not earn up to $1,100 a month. Yet, the government sees salary deductions as a way to motivate the health sector.”

He urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently intervene and direct the immediate refund of what the Guild has termed “illegally deducted funds.”
