Ex-Governor El-Rufai Banished! SDP Hands Down Unprecedented 30-Year Boot

Published

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, banning him from any affiliation with the party for 30 years, citing gross misconduct, false claims of membership, and attempts to destabilise the party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, following a resolution of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) after a comprehensive investigation.

According to Aiyenigba, El-Rufai never properly registered with the party at the ward level, a constitutional requirement, but went ahead to falsely claim SDP membership publicly. He allegedly forged documents and staged photographs with suspended party leaders to lend credibility to the claim.

The party accused the former governor of misinformation, inducement, and manipulation—actions that reportedly stoked internal strife and undermined the SDP’s ideological coherence.

“Despite never completing the registration process at his ward in Kaduna, El-Rufai posted on social media that he had joined the SDP, leading to a wave of congratulations and a letter of support that he solicited,” the statement said.

Further investigations confirmed that El-Rufai had also declared support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), even while attempting to pull the SDP into a coalition without approval—an act the party considered deceitful and divisive.

In response, the SDP declared El-Rufai excommunicated from the party, prohibiting him from using its name, symbols, or engaging in any of its affairs nationwide or globally for the next three decades.

The NWC also reaffirmed that he forged his own membership records, dubbing himself “Number 001” in the SDP’s ward register in Unguwar Sarki, Kaduna North, despite updated official records proving otherwise.

The statement also referenced El-Rufai’s controversial past as governor, alleging his administration’s suppression of the SDP in Kaduna, further casting doubt on his sudden interest in the party.

He had reportedly sought a grand welcome ceremony at the party’s national headquarters, which the leadership denied, advising him instead to follow the proper registration process—a step he allegedly ignored.

The NWC warned that El-Rufai had been trading with the party’s name in forums and political transactions, and accused him of sponsoring dissent within the party, including an attempted illegal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 25, 2025.

“His actions demonstrate a pattern of deception and political opportunism,” the statement read, adding that El-Rufai’s expulsion is in accordance with Articles 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5 of the SDP Constitution (2022, as amended).

The SDP formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities that El-Rufai is not and cannot be recognised as a member of the SDP until July 28, 2055.

Reaffirming its commitment to principled opposition and ideological clarity, the party urged Nigerians interested in joining the SDP to follow lawful procedures and uphold its core values.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.
