Democracy on the Brink! Rigging in 2027 Could Spark National Unrest – Baba-Ahmed

Published

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Political Adviser to Vice President Kashim Shettima, has issued a strong warning on the urgent need for transparency in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a post shared via his verified account on Monday, Baba-Ahmed called on both political leaders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to pay close attention to growing public concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.

He cautioned that failure to conduct a credible and transparent election could plunge the nation into a severe crisis.

“Voices are being raised regarding the integrity of the 2027 elections. Our leaders and INEC should listen. Anything short of the most transparent elections will produce neither winners nor losers,” he warned.

“Rigging will risk plunging this country into its worst crises. No one wants that.”

His remarks come as the House of Representatives debates a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s electoral framework. A proposed amendment to the Electoral Act seeks to mandate all five major elections — presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives, governorship, and state assembly — to be held on a single day.

If adopted, the reform would empower INEC to conduct a one-day nationwide election — a shift that has sparked intense discussions among political stakeholders and civil society groups.

Baba-Ahmed’s comments reflect widespread public skepticism following the controversial 2023 elections, with many citizens demanding stronger safeguards to uphold the credibility of future polls.

Meanwhile, in Osun State, former Governor and interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has urged residents to actively participate in the upcoming Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the state’s governorship election slated for August 8, 2026.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Omoluabi Progressives in Ilesa, Aregbesola emphasized the importance of mobilizing young eligible voters to seize the opportunity provided by the CVR exercise, which begins on August 18.

In a statement released Monday in Osogbo by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Abosede Oluwaseun, Aregbesola said:

“The time has come to swing into action. The forthcoming CVR is crucial to the task ahead. Everyone must participate, mobilise, and galvanise our people, especially the youth.”

He also charged his supporters to remain committed to their core mission of restoring progressive governance in Osun through issue-based campaigns and responsible political engagement.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
