Breaking Barriers: Atiku Commends Maryam Hassan’s UN Role, Calls for More Inclusion
Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Nigerian poet and spoken word artist, Maryam Hassan—popularly known as Alhanislam—on her appointment as a United Nations Global Advocate for Peace.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a message shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Atiku praised Hassan as a “gifted poet and a bold voice for justice,” commending her for consistently using her craft to inspire, empower, and unite people through artistic expression and activism.
Reflecting on a personal moment, the former Vice President noted that Hassan had once encapsulated his political journey through a spoken word piece, which he described as a powerful blend of artistry and purpose.
“I’m incredibly proud of Maryam Bukar Hassan, @Alhan_islam, on her well-deserved appointment as the UN Global Advocate for Peace. She is a gifted poet and a fierce voice for justice who has used her talent to uplift, empower, and inspire unity. Her spoken word once beautifully captured my journey,” he wrote.
“Her poetry resonates with empathy, champions peace, and reflects the aspirations of countless young people. This recognition is a proud moment for Nigeria and for every young African woman chasing a dream. Keep soaring,” Atiku added.
According to PUNCH Online, Hassan’s appointment was announced last week by the United Nations, in recognition of her years of impactful work promoting peace, gender equality, education, and human rights through spoken word poetry.
As a UN Global Advocate for Peace, she is expected to use her voice on a broader stage to promote dialogue, social harmony, and youth empowerment, especially in conflict-prone areas.
Hassan, who hails from Borno State, has graced global platforms such as the African Union and the UN Headquarters with her performances. Renowned for her compassion-driven and justice-oriented poetry, she is widely regarded as one of the leading voices in a growing movement of African creatives who use art as a vehicle for activism. She has also collaborated with numerous local and international organisations to drive creative peacebuilding initiatives in violence-affected communities.
