Fear in the Air: Abdullahi Alleges Governors Are Steering Clear of ADC Over Threats
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has revealed that many state governors are reluctant to join the newly formed opposition coalition because they are being intimidated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
ADC’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this known on Saturday during the third Expanded Meeting of the National Political Consultative Group (North) in Abuja, describing the pressure on governors as “a conspiracy against the Nigerian people.”
It will be recalled that on July 1, top opposition figures – former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC presidential aspirant Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai – formally unveiled the ADC as a united opposition platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Former Senate President David Mark and ex‑Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola were named interim National Chairman and Secretary respectively.
Although some Nigerians have already aligned with the movement, no serving governor has joined since the coalition was announced. Abdullahi attributed this to fear, saying many governors are playing along with the ruling APC to avoid reprisals.
“We are not targeting any serving governor because we know the kind of intimidation they are facing,” Abdullahi said.
“Some who can’t defect outright to APC simply claim to endorse their presidential candidate. That’s fine. But what is happening is nothing short of a conspiracy against the Nigerian people.”
He stressed that the ADC is not built to advance anyone’s personal ambition and cannot be hijacked:
“ADC is not going to be hijacked. The structure of this party ensures it will never coalesce around an individual.
We are not discussing any candidate now. We have no favourite aspirant or flag bearer. Our priority is to build a strong, credible party capable of delivering on the mission we have set for ourselves.”
Abdullahi added that the NPCG North meeting was convened to address pressing issues in the northern region, with a similar consultative session planned soon for the southern part of the country
