Education Shake-Up: PTA Stands Firm on 12-Year Minimum for Secondary School Entry”
The Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria (PTA) has thrown its weight behind the new policy setting 12 years as the minimum age for pupils to transition into Junior Secondary School.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The guideline, captured in the Federal Ministry of Education’s Policy on Non‑State Schools, requires children to complete six years of primary education and be at least 12 years old before gaining admission into Junior Secondary School.
Non‑State Schools—defined as private, independent, or non‑government institutions—are also expected to align with the directive.
According to the policy, basic education spans nine years: six years in primary school and three in Junior Secondary. It further states that pupils should begin Primary One at age six. The policy also outlines a three‑year nursery structure: Nursery One at age three, Nursery Two at age four, and one compulsory year of pre‑primary (kindergarten) at age five, in line with Section 2(17) of the 2013 National Policy on Education.
In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, PTA National President, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, welcomed the move, noting it reflects what the association has consistently advocated.
“This is exactly what we’ve been pushing for. The government’s action is a step in the right direction. Let the children reach this age before entering secondary school,” he said.
Danjuma explained that the framework ensures pupils are mentally and emotionally ready for each stage of learning:
“We agreed as parents and stakeholders that by 18, children should have attained adulthood before entering university. If a child starts JSS1 at 12, they’ll complete secondary school by 18.”
He also cautioned against rushing underage children into higher institutions.
“A 12‑year‑old in the university is clearly underage and would struggle in an environment they’re not ready to handle,” he warned.
