Cancer Treatment Costs Soaring? FG Pushes Patients Toward Insurance Relief

Speaking during a sensitisation programme at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, the NHIA Coordinator in Osun State, Mr. Olalekan Falode, emphasised that health insurance is now mandatory and remains the most reliable way to manage the high cost of illnesses such as cancer.
The event also featured the launch of the NHIA–Roche cost‑sharing initiative in Osun, a collaboration between the Federal Government and pharmaceutical giant Roche. Under this arrangement, patients registered under the NHIA will pay only 20% of the cost of selected cancer drugs, with Roche covering 50% and the NHIA taking care of the remaining 30%.
“Cancer treatment is extremely expensive, and even wealthy individuals struggle to bear the cost,” Falode said. “This initiative offers vital support by drastically reducing patients’ drug expenses. It is truly a lifeline.”
He further explained that newly enrolled patients can start enjoying Roche’s 50% subsidy even before their NHIA registration is fully processed. Once their registration is complete, the NHIA will shoulder an additional 30% of the costs.
“This is why every Nigerian should begin to make enquiries about health insurance,” Falode added. “It is not just mandatory—it is essential.”
Also speaking, Mr. Olayode Babarinde, Healthcare System Partner Policy Lead for Roche Nigeria, noted that the cost-sharing programme is being extended to 17 more centres nationwide, including OAUTHC, to reach more cancer patients.
Prof. John Okeniyi, Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, praised the initiative as an exemplary public‑private partnership that will significantly strengthen cancer care, particularly in follow‑up treatment
