1999 Governors Break Silence, Challenge Tinubu to Deliver Jobs and Protect Rural Communities
Former Edo State Governor Lucky Igbinedion on Friday led a delegation of his fellow 1999 set of governors to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, urging President Bola Tinubu to move beyond short-term palliatives and instead adopt lasting economic measures by strengthening rural security and establishing job‑creating cottage industries across the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This visit marked the second time the “Class of ’99”—the governors elected at the start of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic—would jointly meet with Tinubu since his inauguration in May 2023, the first being shortly after he assumed office on July 12, 2023.
Addressing journalists after their closed-door meeting, Igbinedion highlighted the team’s key concerns, stressing that rural peace is the bedrock of national growth.
“The first and foremost thing is security, because without security there can be no progress, no stability,” he said.
Igbinedion, Edo governor from 1999 to 2007, faulted the heavy reliance on palliatives to tackle economic hardship, insisting that job creation through cottage industries would deliver far more sustainable relief.
“We urged him to establish cottage industries in every local government so people can have meaningful jobs,” he said.
“If you give someone ₦5,000 today, what happens tomorrow? What will they do by lunchtime or dinnertime? ₦5,000 cannot buy much.”
Describing the session as a “heart-to-heart” discussion, Igbinedion revealed that Tinubu welcomed their proposals and promised to act on them.
Beyond security, the delegation pushed for measures to stabilise the naira and strengthen local production in order to curb inflation and make basic goods affordable.
“The economy needs to be stabilised by ensuring the foreign exchange market remains steady so people can afford necessities,” Igbinedion added.
The Class of ’99, which produced Tinubu as Lagos State governor, remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political blocs. Its members include:
-
Abdullahi Adamu, former APC National Chairman
-
Ahmed Makarfi, ex-PDP Chairman
-
George Akume, currently Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
