Violence Will Not Be Tolerated – INEC Reads Riot Act to Parties Before Jigawa Polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Jigawa State has urged political parties to educate their supporters on the need for peace ahead of the forthcoming by-elections in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The appeal was made by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Mahammad Lawan, during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday at the Commission’s conference hall in Dutse, the state capital.
The by-election for the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency is scheduled for August 16, 2025, following the death of Hon. Isa Dogon Yaro, the area’s representative in the House of Representatives, on May 9, 2024.
Prof. Lawan said preparations for the poll were well underway, with over 30 percent of the groundwork already completed. He noted that the upgrading of the BVAS machines had been finalized, describing it as a major milestone in the process.
However, he stressed that more effort was needed in voter education and sensitisation to guarantee a smooth exercise. “We are working to ensure that all sensitive and non-sensitive election materials are fully ready ahead of the by-election day,” Lawan assured.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner also called for stronger collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders, emphasising that the success of the by-election would depend on their collective input.
“The success of this election depends on all of us—INEC, security agencies, political parties, and voters. We must all work together to deliver a peaceful, credible, and hitch-free election,” he said.
During the lengthy interactive session, stakeholders shared views and suggestions on how to ensure a free, fair, and violence-free exercise. Many commended INEC for the progress recorded so far and pledged their cooperation toward the success of the Garki/Babura by-election.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
