The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a rise in road traffic accidents and fatalities across Nigeria in the first half of 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, speaking at a press briefing during the 2025 Half-Year Strategy Session in Abuja on Thursday, disclosed that a total of 5,281 crashes occurred between January and June, involving 39,793 individuals. Of this number, 2,838 people lost their lives, while 17,818 were rescued.

He noted that the figures reflect a 3.9% increase in crashes and a 2.2% rise in fatalities compared to the same period in 2024, describing the first half of the year as particularly challenging for the corps.

“Available data shows that the first six months of 2025 presented significant challenges. A total of 5,281 road traffic crashes were recorded, involving 39,793 persons. Sadly, 2,838 lives were lost, and 17,818 rescued. Compared to the same period in 2024, this marks a 3.9% increase in crashes and a 2.2% rise in fatalities. The total number of people involved in crashes also surged by 8.9%,” he explained.

On enforcement, Mohammed reported a notable increase in arrests and traffic violations.

“Between January and June, FRSC personnel apprehended 290,887 traffic offenders for committing 319,798 offences. In comparison, 250,720 offenders were arrested and 271,895 violations recorded in 2024. This represents a 16% increase in arrests and a 14.9% rise in recorded offences,” he said.

He clarified that the uptick in enforcement activity underscores the corps’ increased vigilance rather than any weakening of its mandate.

“This surge in arrests and offences should not be interpreted as a sign of institutional failure. Instead, it affirms our commitment to proactive and visible enforcement in ensuring road safety,” he said.

The Corps Marshal also highlighted the growing pressure on Nigeria’s road network, with over 30 million passengers travelling in 2.3 million vehicles within the six-month period. Notably, Anambra and Kano States alone accounted for more than 6.5 million passengers, representing about 22% of the national total.

“Passenger and vehicle volume had a direct impact on traffic violations and enforcement efforts. Despite the strain on infrastructure and manpower, FRSC has remained resolute,” he stated.

Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, Mohammed assured Nigerians that the FRSC remains a resilient and professional institution adapting to rising demands through innovation and diligence.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.
