Who Wears the Crown? APC NEC Holds High‑Stakes Meeting to Elect Chairman!

The session, scheduled for 10 a.m. at the APC National Secretariat, will formally appoint a substantive successor to Abdullahi Ganduje, who recently stepped down due to health challenges.
In the run‑up to today’s gathering, the National Working Committee (NWC)—the party’s highest administrative organ—held a closed‑door meeting on Monday to fine‑tune the NEC agenda. Though no official communiqué was issued after the two‑hour deliberation, an NWC member confirmed to The Nation that discussions revolved around picking a new chairman and approving a timetable for forthcoming congresses ahead of the next national convention.
Multiple strategy sessions were held between Monday and Tuesday to build consensus. On Monday, APC departmental directors reportedly met at the Presidential Villa to finalise the list of NEC attendees.
Those expected at today’s meeting include the President, Vice President, members of the NWC, the Senate President and Deputy, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Deputy, all APC governors, and Speakers of APC‑controlled state assemblies.
On Tuesday, Acting National Chairman Ali Bukar Dalori also convened a key session with APC state chairmen at the national secretariat, aimed at securing alignment on the proposed congress timetable and ensuring state structures are in sync with the national leadership ahead of the 2026 convention.
Later that day, APC governors held another strategic meeting with the NWC in Asokoro, Abuja, underscoring the party’s efforts to present a united front before unveiling its new leadership.
“We are fully prepared for the NEC meeting,” an NWC member said on condition of anonymity. “Invitations have been sent to all members, and the NWC has been engaging with other organs of the party to ensure a hitch‑free session.”
When asked about the party’s caucus meeting, the source explained:
“I am not sure we will hold a caucus meeting. All our discussions with the Secretariat and the Presidency have focused on the NEC. The President, party leaders, and all NEC members have been invited, and the meeting will certainly produce a substantive National Chairman to replace Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.”
On the meeting’s agenda, the source added:
“I’m not at liberty to disclose details, but the appointment of a National Chairman is top priority. Other matters, such as the congress timetable, will also be discussed.”
