Makurdi IDP Camp in Mourning as Lawmakers Promise Swift Justice for Herdsmen’s Brutal Assault

Dajoh gave this assurance on Tuesday during a legislative solidarity visit to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camped at the Makurdi International Market.
The visit, reports say, was part of a broader effort by the Assembly to assess the welfare of victims affected by the renewed wave of violence in the state.
“No one will take your land,” Dajoh declared while addressing the IDPs.
Many of those in the camp had fled their homes in Yelewata following the June 13, 2025, invasion that left several dead, many injured, and hundreds displaced.
“We stand with you in this painful moment. The Benue State Government, under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, is fully committed to ensuring your safe and dignified return,” he added.
The Speaker condemned the attack in strong terms, vowing that the state government would not allow the perpetrators to achieve their aim of displacing the community.
Dajoh also praised Governor Alia for his swift response, particularly the rapid establishment of the IDP camp at the Makurdi International Market, which has now become a safe haven for hundreds.
He commended the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for promptly mobilising relief materials to the victims, but warned against any misuse of such aid.
“We thank SEMA for rising to the occasion,” Dajoh noted.
“But we must also insist that transparency and accountability in distributing relief items is non‑negotiable.”
The Speaker directed a firm message to relief managers, including SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Sir James Iorpuu, urging them to ensure that assistance gets directly to the victims without diversion.
“Every intervention must reach the displaced persons. This is not the time for bureaucracy or selective distribution. Everyone here deserves equal care,” he stressed.
