Impending Disaster: Hundreds of Communities, 28 States Braced for Massive Floods
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a fresh flood alert covering 28 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, warning that over 739 communities in 162 local government areas face heightened flood risks between Tuesday and August 5.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The alert, released on Wednesday, follows projections in NIHSA’s 2025 Annual Flood Outlook published on April 10 and is part of its routine weekly advisories aimed at helping residents and relevant authorities stay prepared.
States on High Flood Alert
The states identified include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe.
In a statement signed by NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammad, the agency cautioned that the severity and impact of flooding will differ across the affected states and urged emergency agencies to immediately activate response mechanisms.
Key Infrastructure and Agriculture at Risk
NIHSA further noted that critical urban centers such as Lagos and Abuja are also vulnerable, with more than 100 major transport corridors—including Okene–Lokoja–Abuja Road, Birnin Kebbi–Bunza Road, and Ibi–Wukari Road—at risk of disruption.
“There is also an increased risk of damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure in low-lying and flood-prone areas,” the statement warned. It also flagged the threat to farmlands, stressing that crops across several regions could be submerged, further straining national food security.
The agency urged residents in high‑risk zones to implement evacuation plans immediately and advised the public to stay informed through NIHSA’s Flood Dashboard at www.nihsa.gov.ng and its official social media channels.
“All emergency management stakeholders are strongly advised to activate preparedness and response protocols,” NIHSA added.
