From Dust to Green: Jigawa Unveils Mega Tree‑Planting Initiative Against Desert Spread

Experts have long identified desertification as one of Jigawa’s most pressing environmental challenges. The state’s fragile ecosystem and geographical location leave it highly vulnerable, posing serious risks to residents’ livelihoods and overall development.
Speaking on Tuesday at the official flag‑off of the tree‑planting campaign in Dutse—an event organised by the Partnership for Development Action (PADAC) and supported by ACReSAL—the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Abdullahi Namadi, revealed that the government has already nurtured five million seedlings for distribution and planting across all 27 local government areas.
“Governor Umar Namadi’s administration is deeply committed to making Jigawa greener,” Namadi said.
“We recognise the urgent need to address desertification, which is being worsened by climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable land‑use practices.”
He explained that the seedlings have been allocated not only to local government areas but also to community‑based organisations, civil society groups, MDAs, and other stakeholders. These groups have been encouraged to actively participate in planting and maintaining the trees to protect the state’s ecosystem.
Namadi commended PADAC’s efforts, describing the collaboration as “a welcome development,” and stressed that the success of the initiative depends on the commitment of all stakeholders, from government agencies to communities and individuals.
Also speaking at the event, Wamban Dutse, Mustapha Aminu, a traditional titleholder, assured attendees that local communities have already put mechanisms in place to ensure the sustainability of the trees.
“We have put measures in place to make sure the trees are well cared for,” he said, urging parents to caution their children against damaging the seedlings.
“These trees will positively impact the environment and improve the lives of people in Jigawa and beyond. They will help fight desertification, promote sustainable development, and strengthen our ecosystem.”
In her remarks, Mrs. Jarom Blessing, Programme Officer of PADAC, highlighted the organisation’s 12‑year track record in driving initiatives on climate change, education, and gender policies. She noted that last year alone, PADAC planted nearly 100,000 trees in locations including Army Barracks, schools, and local governments across Jigawa.
“This year, we aim to plant another 100,000 tree seedlings in different parts of the state,” she added.
“It aligns with our organisation’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.”
