APC Dominance Grows! Senate Majority Swells After Four PDP Senators Defect

The defectors—Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), Oluwole Olubiyi (Osun Central), Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East), and Samson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South)—formally announced their departure from the PDP during plenary.
Their resignation letters were read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who immediately directed the Clerk of the Senate to update the chamber’s records to reflect the new party alignments.
With this latest wave of defections, the composition of the 10th Senate now stands as follows: APC – 70, PDP – 28, Labour Party – 5, NNPP – 1, SDP – 2, and APGA – 1.
The announcement took place in the presence of top APC figures, including the party’s National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, former Minister of Labour Senator Chris Ngige, and several House of Representatives members who attended to show solidarity.
Political analysts describe the development as a major blow to the PDP—particularly in Akwa Ibom State, long regarded as a stronghold of the opposition—while positioning the APC to further tighten its grip in the region.
In his resignation letter, Senator Aniekan Bassey cited Sections 40 and 68(1)(g) of the Constitution, stressing that his move was both “deeply considered” and “imperative.”
“This decision has become necessary in view of the prevailing political developments in my constituency and within the PDP, whose structure has been fractured beyond redemption,” Bassey wrote.
He thanked the PDP for the platform it provided but noted that his defection was in the “overall interest” of his constituents.
Welcoming Bassey to the ruling party, Akpabio—himself a former Akwa Ibom governor—said:
“Senator Aniekan Bassey has now joined the APC. I welcome him with open arms. He has depleted the rank and file of the left-hand side to populate the right-hand side.”
Senator Samson Ekong also defended his decision, pointing to shifting political dynamics in Akwa Ibom:
“Politics is a game of interest, and if I may add, circumstances. In Akwa Ibom State, the earth has moved with the convergence of principal political players on the APC platform. My people have high hopes for commensurate reward systems within the APC power matrix.”
Ekong further referenced the defection of Governor Pastor Umoh Eno to the APC and the mass alignment of key stakeholders in the state with the ruling party as critical factors in his decision
