Her surprise announcement comes just hours before Tuesday’s semi-final showdown between Nigeria and South Africa at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, Morocco.
Oshoala, who previously starred for Barcelona Femení and currently plays as a striker for Bay FC in the NWSL, shared the news via her Facebook page on Monday night.
According to ThisDay, the former Arsenal Women forward explained that stepping aside was a deliberate move to give younger talents a chance to shine on the global stage.
“At 30, with six African Women’s Best Player awards, I will bow out to start a new chapter after WAFCON 2024/25,” she wrote.
“Thank you for your unwavering support. I’m forever grateful for the love and sacrifices shared with me throughout this journey.”
Oshoala leaves the national team as the most decorated African female footballer in history, having claimed CAF Women’s Player of the Year titles in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023.
Regarded as one of the finest players of her generation, her decision marks the end of an era for the Super Falcons while opening a new chapter for the emerging stars of Nigerian women’s football.
