Shockwaves in SDP as Party Plots Chairman’s Expulsion and Corruption Investigation

Published

on

Fresh indications have emerged that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has finalized plans to expel its suspended National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, along with two other officials.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Vanguard, the NWC also intends to refer the trio to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation and possible prosecution after they failed to appear before the party’s probe panel.

It was gathered that the three officials declined invitations to defend themselves against allegations of gross financial misconduct, embezzlement, misappropriation, and diversion of party funds totaling over ₦1 billion. The decision follows the submission of a detailed probe report by a fact-finding committee.

Presenting the report to the Acting National Chairman, Dr. Sadiq Abubakar, and other NWC members, the Chairman of the five-member panel, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar‑Sadick Liman (retd.), revealed that only the suspended National Auditor appeared before the committee, while the other two accused persons refused to honour its summons.

He explained that, among other NWC members, only the National Organizing Secretary also defied the committee’s invitation.

Liman recalled that the Disciplinary Committee, inaugurated on Friday, July 4, 2025, was mandated to conduct an in-depth investigation into a prima facie case of criminal conspiracy, fraud, and theft against the three officials.

The committee’s terms of reference included:

  • Verifying the allegations of breaches of the SDP Constitution (2022 as amended);

  • Examining the party’s accounts;

  • Investigating the production and submission of the party’s audited accounts to INEC;

  • Advising on better financial management to prevent future abuses; and

  • Making recommendations within a 14-day timeframe.

“We commenced sitting on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at the National Secretariat in Abuja,” Liman said. “To meet the deadline, we promptly issued formal invitations to the accused persons, all NWC members, personal aides of the suspended chairman, contractors, and the external auditor. This was done in the interest of natural justice and fair hearing.”

Liman noted that despite these efforts, only the suspended National Auditor appeared, while the others deliberately ignored the invitations. “The committee, however, obtained sufficient evidence from those who testified and from documentary materials provided by the NWC,” he added.

Based on these findings, the panel made far-reaching recommendations aimed at restoring the party’s integrity and effectiveness.

“The committee believes that implementing these recommendations will not only reposition the SDP but also send a clear message to Nigerians that they should not lose faith in our democratic process and leadership,” Liman said. “This bold step shows that the SDP is committed to cleansing itself and upholding leadership values such as integrity, accountability, transparency, courage, patriotism, and moral credibility.”

It will be recalled that on July 4, 2025, the SDP leadership inaugurated the five-man investigative panel to conduct a thorough probe into the alleged mismanagement of party funds—estimated at over ₦1 billion—by Gabam, Nze Nnadi Clarkson (National Auditor), and Uchechukwu Chukwuma (National Youth Leader).

“South Has Had More Time In Power” — Atiku Speaks On Zoning Debate

Published

on

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has argued that the North is not disadvantaged in Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement under democratic rule.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Atiku made the statement during an interview on Arise Television, where he spoke on zoning, fairness, and political balance in the country.

He noted that since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, the South has held the presidency for about 18 years, while the North has governed for roughly 10 years.

According to him, this should be taken into account when discussing which region has benefited more from the country’s power rotation system. He also maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains the only major political party with zoning clearly embedded in its constitution.

“The South has governed for 18 years and the North for 10. So who is really in deficit if we are being fair? Even more broadly, the only party with zoning formally entrenched is the PDP,” he said.

Atiku also recalled the constitutional conference held during the military era under General Sani Abacha, where he led a group that opposed the inclusion of rotational presidency in the constitution.

He said the proposal, championed by the late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, was rejected at the time because his group had majority support among delegates.

According to him, Ekwueme later acknowledged that the decision may not have been ideal during his funeral years later. Atiku added that he now believes a rotational system, if adopted earlier, could have ensured a more balanced distribution of power across Nigeria’s regions.
