Outrage Erupts! Metuh Condemns Edo Gov’s Controversial Ban on Peter Obi!”
Former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, has urged President Bola Tinubu to call state governors to order over what he described as undemocratic clampdowns on citizens’ constitutional rights.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Metuh made the appeal in a Facebook post on Sunday while reacting to comments by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who said Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, must obtain security clearance before entering the state.
PUNCH Online earlier reported that Governor Okpebholo made the remark while receiving former federal lawmaker Marcus Onobun into the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor alleged that Obi’s recent visit to Benin—during which he donated ₦15m to a nursing school—was followed by violence.
“That man who says he has no shishi came and dropped ₦15m. Where did he get it from?
After he left, three people were killed.
For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance,” Okpebholo was quoted as saying.
In his reaction, Metuh described the governor’s stance as a dangerous threat to democracy and individual freedoms.
“I have been recuperating from a spinal procedure, but just read the disturbing news that the elected Governor of Edo State—who is otherwise a decent and distinguished senator—has banned a fellow Nigerian from visiting his state,” Metuh wrote.
He recalled a similar incident involving another governor from the North Central region, warning against normalising such unconstitutional measures.
“While one may understand the zeal to show loyalty to the president, these actions run contrary to the foundation and spirit of democratic governance. They violate constitutionally guaranteed rights to freedom and liberty, regardless of political beliefs or affiliations,” he said.
Metuh urged President Tinubu to distance himself from these practices, invoking the president’s record as Lagos governor:
“We remember the Governor Bola Tinubu who ran an all‑inclusive government in Lagos and made the state home for all Nigerians.”
He lamented that many political leaders have remained silent out of fear or self‑interest:
“Sadly, many of our leaders have kept mute, either for political correctness, fear of reprisals, or expectations of personal benefits.”
Metuh concluded by appealing to the president to intervene:
“Let Nigeria truly belong to all citizens, and may all persons enjoy their freedom and liberties across the land.”
