In a statement signed on Tuesday by the NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the council noted that Oba Adetona’s death represents a profound loss not only to Ogun State but to the entire Muslim community in Nigeria. The NSCIA, chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, hailed the late monarch as a leader whose reign was marked by exceptional service, religious devotion, and a commitment to peace and noble causes.
Oba Adetona, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after 65 years on the throne, was buried the following day in accordance with Islamic rites.
“The passing of Oba Adetona is not just a loss to the government and people of Ogun State; it is a loss to the entire Muslim Ummah in Nigeria,” the statement read. “His long reign was more than a chapter in Ijebu history — it was a legacy of selfless leadership, devotion to faith, and contributions to peace and development. He will be sorely missed.”
The council further described the Awujale as a man whose influence extended far beyond Ijebuland, noting that leaders across Nigeria often sought his counsel. Until his passing, he also served as chairman of the Ogun State Muslim Council.
The NSCIA extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, the Ijebu people worldwide, the Ogun State Muslim Community and Council, the government and people of Ogun State, and the wider Muslim Ummah.
“Oba Adetona’s invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the Muslim community in Ogun State and across Nigeria will forever be remembered,” the council added. “With deep grief yet total submission to the will of Almighty Allah, we mourn the passing of this iconic monarch and pray that Allah grants him eternal rest.”
