Strike Imminent! Ekiti Doctors Give Government Ultimatum on Allowance Review

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ekiti State branch, has warned that it will shut down all government health facilities in the state if the Federal Government fails to meet the demands of its national body by withdrawing the newly introduced allowance structure for doctors.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking with journalists in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, the state NMA chairman, Dr. Ifedayo Oreyemi, said the Ekiti chapter was fully prepared to join any industrial action that the national leadership may declare once the ongoing 21‑day ultimatum expires.

The NMA’s national leadership had earlier issued the ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the reversal of a controversial circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission on June 27, 2025 (reference number SWC/S/04/S.218/11/646). The circular, which was presented as an upward review of allowances, has been described by the association as “obnoxious and insensitively provocative.”

Dr. Oreyemi argued that the directive grossly violated existing Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), which had established clear relativity between doctors’ remuneration and that of other health professionals.

“The action of the Federal Government clearly shows insensitivity and a disregard for agreements previously entered into with the NMA,” Oreyemi stated.

He added that Nigerian doctors rank among the best physicians and surgeons globally, urging the country’s leaders to invest meaningfully in the nation’s health sector instead of relying on foreign medical systems.

To avert the looming strike, the NMA listed several demands, including:

  • Immediate withdrawal of the June 27, 2025 circular on the review of allowances for medical and dental officers in the federal public service.

  • Correction of consequential adjustments in line with CBAs signed in 2001, 2009, and 2014.

  • Enforcement of relativity between CONMESS and CONHESS, especially on call duty allowances and other professional benefits, with payment of all outstanding backlogs.

  • Immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) and an upward review of the MRTF in line with current economic realities.

  • Immediate commencement of overdue CBA negotiations on CONMESS.

  • Release of circulars on clinical duty and other allowances for honorary consultants as agreed in January 2024.

  • Implementation of scarce skills allowances for medical consultants, approval of specialist and excess workload allowances for all doctors, and full compliance with the 2021 CBA on hazard allowances.

Dr. Oreyemi stressed that failure to meet these conditions would leave the association with no choice but to join a nationwide industrial action, warning that the government must act swiftly to avoid a complete shutdown of public healthcare services in Ekiti State and beyond.

Makinde made the declaration on Thursday during the APM South-West town hall meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He expressed confidence that the party would secure a sweeping victory in the 2027 polls, describing its agenda as a plan to reset the country.

Makinde made the prediction after Mohammed was introduced at the gathering and described as an incoming senator.

Speaking at the event, the APM presidential candidate said, “Well, APM is going to win this election overwhelmingly because this is the reset agenda being put before Nigerians, so I dare to say that my national leader is the incoming Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He urged Nigerians to listen to the party’s message and support its proposed agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.

Makinde also discussed the qualities he believes Nigerians should consider when choosing their next president, arguing that physical energy and the ability to tackle national challenges should take precedence over age.

According to him, the next president must possess the stamina to work long hours and respond effectively to the country’s pressing problems.

He stated, “While I will not make age an issue in this campaign, I will make energy, having energy, being able to stay up late to deal with the challenges we face as a country.”

Makinde further challenged presidential candidates to demonstrate their physical fitness, urging voters to consider their capacity to handle the demands of the presidency.

“So please, when they bring their presidential candidates, let the candidates be able to jump, and if they can do that, vote for them,” he added.
