Oil Sector Scandal Explodes: Arewa Youths Petition Anti-Graft Agencies Over NMDPRA Fraud Claims
The Arewa Youths Forum for Equity and Transparency has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately suspend Engr. Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), following allegations that he spent over $5.5 million on his children’s education abroad.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement on Thursday, the group’s President, Aminu Salihu Muktar, said such unexplained personal expenditure by a public officer raises serious questions about integrity and accountability in public service.
“President Tinubu must confront a familiar moral question—what makes Farouk Ahmed different from Betta Edu or Babachir Lawal? Both were removed from office over integrity issues. The same standard should apply here,” Muktar declared.
The group alleged that Ahmed’s children attended some of Europe’s most exclusive schools — Montreux Secondary School, Aiglon College, Institut Le Rosey, and La Garenne International School — with one later moving to NIIT Pune in India.
According to the forum, the combined tuition and upkeep for his four children allegedly totals $5.5 million, an amount far beyond the lawful earnings of a career civil servant.
“Engr. Ahmed has not denied the schools his children attended, nor has he provided evidence of legitimate income sources to support such spending. Nigerians deserve to know: where did the $5.5 million come from?” the group queried.
The group further criticized the administration for tolerating what it described as “glaring financial inconsistencies” at a time when millions of children in northern Nigeria lack access to even basic education.
“At a time when many families can’t afford school uniforms, a public officer allegedly spends $200,000 per child annually on luxury boarding schools. If this is not abuse of office, what is?” Muktar said.
Drawing parallels with previous high-profile dismissals, the group called on President Tinubu to act decisively:
“The facts are public, the outrage is real, and silence is no longer an option. Suspend Farouk Ahmed and allow the EFCC, ICPC, and Code of Conduct Bureau to carry out an open, transparent investigation.”
Muktar stressed that the demand was not for punishment without due process but for proper scrutiny:
“If he is innocent, let the evidence clear him. If not, justice must take its course.”
