In a heartfelt Facebook tribute, Peterside wrote:
Our daddy is gone. What a man.
He signed me to play for Sharks and gave me my first match against Niger Tornadoes of Minna.
The first day he saw me train with Sharks, he asked, ‘My friend, are you a boxer?’ He said I was built like Tyson. From that day, I found a football father. I became very close to him and his family, with Puppa K as a very close brother.”
Sinclair, a member of the Green Eagles squad in the 1960s, was renowned for his keen eye for talent and his immense contribution to football development in Nigeria.
He launched his coaching career with the now-defunct Sharks FC of Rivers State and later managed Niger Tornadoes, Enugu Rangers, and Bayelsa United. In 1997, he took charge of the Super Eagles as interim coach and also served as head coach of the Equatorial Guinea national team.
Sinclair is credited with mentoring some of Nigeria’s finest footballers, including Peter Rufai, Taribo West, Finidi George, and Peterside Idah. His grassroots impact and dedication to nurturing young players left a lasting legacy on Nigerian football.
His death comes only days after the passing of another football legend, Peter Rufai, who had been battling a long-term illness.
