UPDATED: Nigeria’s Former VP Atiku Abubakar Abruptly Exits PDP, What Next?
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership of the opposition party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku’s decision, which comes amid preparations for the 2027 polls, follows his open admission of involvement in forming a coalition platform, the Alliance Democratic Congress.
His resignation was contained in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. A copy of the letter was later shared on X by his Special Assistant on Media, Abdul Rasheeth, on Wednesday.
In the letter, Atiku wrote:
“I am writing to formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
I sincerely appreciate the opportunities the party has given me. Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and twice as the party’s presidential candidate remain some of the most remarkable chapters of my life.
As one of the founding fathers of this great party, it is indeed painful to make this decision. However, I believe the current trajectory of the party no longer aligns with the principles we once shared. With irreconcilable differences now evident, I find it necessary to part ways.
I wish the party and its leadership well in the future, and I thank you once again for the support and trust over the years.”
The former Vice President lamented the deepening internal crises in the PDP, which he believes have diminished the party’s ability to compete effectively in upcoming elections.
Interestingly, his resignation comes after weeks of speculation about his political future. Earlier, Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, had dismissed reports of any defection, insisting that his principal remained a staunch and loyal PDP member.
At the time, Ibe described the rumours as “politically motivated falsehoods designed to mislead the public and create unnecessary confusion.”
He said in a statement:
“We ordinarily would not waste words on faceless social media platforms like the so‑called Adamawa Happenings. However, in response to inquiries from Nigerians and credible journalists, we must set the record straight:
His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the PDP, has not—repeat, has not—resigned from the PDP. He remains a steadfast, bonafide, and loyal member of the party.
The rumours are a calculated attempt by desperate political operatives to misinform the public and sow discord among millions of Nigerians who look up to Atiku Abubakar for direction and leadership.”
Atiku’s resignation letter has now confirmed what many had suspected, signaling a major shake‑up in the country’s opposition politics as the race to 2027 gathers momentum.
