I Never Knew Buhari Personally Before My CDS Appointment – Irabor Drops Bombshell
Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (retd.), has revealed a striking detail about his 2021 appointment: he had never met then‑President Muhammadu Buhari prior to being named to the top military post.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a moving tribute to the late president on Tuesday, Irabor described Buhari as “a good man, disciplined and deeply principled.”
He explained that Buhari’s leadership style was built on trust and delegation, noting that the former president gave his appointees full confidence and never resorted to micromanagement.
According to Irabor, Buhari’s quiet confidence was sometimes misconstrued, but those who worked with him recognised it as a reflection of his strong character.
“Before he appointed me as Chief of Defence Staff on January 26, 2021, I had never met him in person. I only knew him from a distance—through history books, the news, and the high regard in which he was held in military circles,” Irabor recounted.
“When he appointed me, he simply said: ‘I have never met you before, but I have heard of your performance. I hope you will not disappoint.’”
Reflecting on his experience, Irabor said:
“In President Buhari, I encountered a disciplined and deeply principled leader—a man who spoke little but listened deeply. He would sit for hours, focused and composed, never once asking for a break. I once teased him about his patience and stamina; he only smiled.”
Irabor expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve under Buhari:
“To my Commander-in-Chief, my Principal—President Muhammadu Buhari—at the sound of the Last Post, rest well. You fought the good fight. May your soul find eternal peace in the bosom of the Almighty.”
He also offered heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, especially former First Lady Aisha Buhari, describing the late leader’s service as one marked by “dignity, honour, and integrity.”
