Dr. Badero, who is based in the United States and currently serves as CEO of Cardiac Renal & Vascular Associates in Jackson, Mississippi, holds the global distinction of being the world’s first and only board-certified interventional cardio-nephrologist. His appointment is expected to significantly impact the development of cardiology and nephrology in Nigeria, especially through mentorship of young medical professionals.
According to a statement from Iwosan Lagoon Hospital, where Dr. Badero is also the Clinical Head and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Program and Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, the appointment reflects a growing trend of diaspora experts returning to invest in Nigeria’s healthcare and educational systems.
“The future of Nigerian medicine depends on how well we nurture and mentor upcoming professionals. I am committed to transferring knowledge, building local expertise, and equipping our young physicians to lead on a global stage,” said Dr. Badero.
A proud indigene of Isonyin, Ogun State, Dr. Badero is believed to be the first Professor of Medicine from his hometown—an achievement hailed as both a personal and communal milestone.
Reacting to the development, Iwosan Lagoon Hospital praised the University of Lagos for recognising Dr. Badero’s outstanding academic and clinical contributions.
“We proudly celebrate Prof. Olurotimi John Badero’s prestigious appointment. His recognition reflects his exceptional blend of academic depth, clinical mastery, and visionary leadership that continues to inspire across borders.”
As a Visiting Professor, Dr. Badero will be instrumental in mentoring specialists in interventional cardiology, facilitating access to advanced medical procedures, and elevating healthcare delivery and medical training in Nigeria.
The University of Lagos also affirmed that his presence would enhance the training of medical residents and consultants through structured mentorship, international research collaborations, and alignment with global best practices.
His appointment is widely regarded as a powerful example of how diaspora-led mentorship can drive innovation, improve patient care, and contribute to the long-term development of sustainable health institutions in Nigeria.
