Enrique Explodes: ‘Don’t Call Me a Loser!’ – PSG Boss Reacts to Club World Cup Chaos
Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has defended his actions following Sunday’s fiery 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final.
The clash at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey saw Chelsea take control with a commanding display, courtesy of a brace from Cole Palmer and a strike from João Pedro. But the real drama unfolded after the final whistle.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Tensions boiled over in the aftermath, leading to an altercation between Chelsea’s João Pedro and PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Amid the melee, Enrique stepped in to break up the fight but was caught on camera appearing to shove Pedro to the ground.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Enrique denied any aggressive intent, insisting he was simply trying to de-escalate the situation.
“My only aim was to separate the players and prevent further conflict. It was an unnecessary situation that got out of hand. There were a lot of pushes and shoves,” he explained.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, whose team put in a composed and clinical performance, was also seen in the fray, attempting to calm tempers as chaos briefly took over.
Enrique added, “I saw Maresca being pushed and pushing others as well. We were both trying to restore calm. That’s the reality. There was too much emotion, and the situation could’ve been avoided. I won’t comment further on it.”
Despite PSG’s defeat, Enrique dismissed claims that the result diminishes his achievements, including last season’s historic treble of the Champions League, Ligue 1, and French Cup titles.
“Loser? No. I’m not a loser—I’m the runner-up,” he fired back. “There are no losers at this level of football. A loser is someone who doesn’t even try, who doesn’t get out of bed.”
With the Club World Cup behind them, PSG now turn their attention to the UEFA Super Cup, where they’re set to face Tottenham Hotspur on August 13 in another high-profile showdown.
