New Wig Alert: Former Yahaya Bello Aide Onogwu Muhammed Now A Lawyer
LAGOS – Onogwu Isah Muhammed, the former Chief Press Secretary to the Kogi State Governor, has pledged to use his recent call to the Nigerian Bar as a springboard for justice sector reforms.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
NIVONEWS, Muhammed described the achievement not as a personal endpoint but as the beginning of a lifelong mission to defend the voiceless and confront systemic legal failures across Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Friday, Muhammed traced his motivation for studying law to personal encounters with injustice, rights violations, and the inefficiencies of the legal system. “I studied law not merely as an academic pursuit, but because I witnessed injustice firsthand — the abuse of rights, the delays that crush hope, and the dangerous consequences of a broken legal system,” he said.
He reflected on how judicial decisions once held sacred weight and public trust. “There was a time court pronouncements were final and revered — Roma locuta, causa finita est,” he noted, lamenting the erosion of that trust due to political meddling, conflicting judgments, and corruption.
According to NIVONEWS, Muhammed emphasized that flawed court rulings not only affect litigants but also inflict lasting psychological damage on society. “These are no longer just institutional shortcomings; they have become national emergencies,” he said.
Leveraging his background in public policy and strategic communications, Muhammed revealed plans to focus on criminal justice reform, civic legal education, and policy advocacy. He recalled an externship at a detention facility, where he met detainees held without charge — a blatant violation of Nigeria’s constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). “One inmate had been in custody for three months simply because he went to buy suya,” he recounted.
According to NIVONEWS, Muhammed said his admission as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria marks the start of a higher calling. “The legal robe I now wear is not a trophy — it is a responsibility. I must be a voice for the vulnerable, a defender of justice, a reformer of systems,” he declared.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to those who supported his journey, including former Governor Yahaya Bello, whom he called “the wind beneath my wings,” as well as Chief Edward Onoja, SAN Mohammed Sani Ibrahim, and Dr. Folashade Arike.
“May the Nigerian Bar continue to rise, and may justice once again become the standard by which we govern and are governed,” he said.
