Mr. Edwin, a law student at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, made the appeal during a humanitarian visit to the Dekina Correctional Facility. He led a delegation of law students from various institutions in Kogi State, emphasizing their shared commitment to social justice and community advocacy.
According to NIVONEWS, during the visit, the students interacted with several inmates, some of whom narrated disturbing accounts of prolonged detention due to their inability to pay fines as low as N30,000—highlighting systemic flaws in access to justice.
The outreach was warmly received by the inmates, who described the visit as a symbol of hope and a reminder that they were not forgotten by society. In his remarks, Comptroller Gambo of the correctional facility praised the initiative and stressed the importance of equipping inmates with vocational skills and life tools that could aid rehabilitation.
According to NIVONEWS, the visit further reflects the increasing involvement of law students in pushing for reform in the justice system, particularly through grassroots engagement and humanitarian intervention.
