Chaos Looms: 13 Political Parties Reject Peace Accord Ahead of Lagos LG Elections!
Residents of Lagos State are heading to the polls today, Saturday, July 12, to elect chairmen and councillors across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), with the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) assuring citizens of a credible and transparent process.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
However, the political atmosphere is fraught with tension, following widespread discontent among opposition parties and civil society groups, casting doubts on the integrity of the electoral exercise.
In what observers have described as a troubling signal, 13 out of the 15 registered political parties in Lagos boycotted the traditional peace accord facilitated by LASIEC — an event typically held to reinforce commitments to peaceful elections. Only the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Youth Party signed the accord, while the remaining parties opted out, citing unresolved grievances and perceived procedural injustice.
Party representatives, led by members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), said they were excluded from critical consultations, particularly regarding election guidelines and deadlines. IPAC’s Public Relations Officer, George Ashiru, condemned LASIEC’s refusal to extend the nomination window despite multiple appeals.
“The Commission failed to consult stakeholders before rolling out its timetable. Most parties couldn’t meet the rigid deadlines, especially given internal party conflicts,” Ashiru stated.
Labour Party (LP) Chairperson, Dayo Ekong, also urged LASIEC to reconsider its stance, explaining that ongoing crises within her party hindered adequate preparation. She further alleged that LP campaign materials — including posters and billboards — were defaced in several parts of the state.
Despite being present at the peace accord event, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, reportedly refrained from commenting on the parties’ concerns.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR) has demanded an immediate postponement of the polls, citing constitutional violations linked to the delayed implementation of the recently signed Local Government Administrative Law.
CHSR President, Alex Omotehinse, led a peaceful protest to the Lagos State House of Assembly, submitting a petition urging lawmakers to enforce the law without further delay.
According to CHSR, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the law on May 7, 2025, but its implementation was controversially deferred until August 4 — notably after the scheduled elections. The group argued that this delay was politically calculated and subverts democratic principles.
“The deferment is unjustifiable, unconstitutional, and reeks of political manipulation,” the petition read. “It not only undermines the legislative process but also introduces legal uncertainty into today’s elections, risking post-election litigation and instability.”
CHSR called on the Lagos Assembly to declare the effective date of the law as May 7, insisting that failure to do so would erode public trust and potentially prompt national and international intervention.
