Eyewitnesses described the rainfall as one of the most intense in recent memory, triggering widespread panic as families fled their homes, many with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
In response to the disaster, Governor Nasir Idris visited the affected area on Thursday to commiserate with victims and assess the damage. During the visit, he announced a ₦50 million relief fund to cushion the impact of the flood on the displaced residents.
“The government is fully committed to ensuring that normalcy returns to this community,” Governor Idris assured, promising immediate interventions.
As part of the visit, the governor also approved the renovation of the district head’s palace and the upgrade of Government Day Secondary School, Zogirma, to a fully functional boarding school. He further donated an additional ₦10 million to the District Head, Alhaji Mohammed Jambo Tele, in support of the palace rehabilitation.
In his remarks, the District Head praised the governor’s timely intervention, describing it as a clear sign of his dedication to the well-being of the people. “Your visit shows true leadership and compassion. We remain grateful for your unwavering support,” he said.
Chairman of Bunza LGA, Zayyanu Shehu Bunza, commended the state government for its swift response, noting that the relief package offers much-needed hope to a community grappling with hardship.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), led by Chairman Bello Yakubu, has commenced distribution of relief materials to the victims. Items being shared include 100 bags each of rice, sorghum, and millet, as well as tomatoes and other essential supplies.
Governor Idris concluded his visit by expressing appreciation for the people’s continued support for his administration and reaffirmed his commitment to providing responsive governance and sustainable development across Kebbi State.
