Fury in Washington as Nigeria Rejects U.S. Bid to Dump Venezuelan Ex-Convicts — Tuggar Reveals Shocking Plot

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has disclosed that the United States is pressuring African nations, including Nigeria, to receive deported Venezuelans—some of whom are ex-convicts. Tuggar, however, maintained that it would be extremely difficult for Nigeria to comply.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking during a One-on-One interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday evening, the minister also addressed claims linking the new 10 per cent U.S. tariffs on Nigerian exports to President Bola Tinubu’s participation at the BRICS summit in Brazil.

“The recent tariffs imposed by the U.S. may not necessarily be connected to our involvement in BRICS,” Tuggar explained. “But we must understand that the U.S. is exerting significant pressure on African countries to accept deportees from Venezuela—some of them straight from prison cells.”

He firmly rejected the idea: “For a country like Nigeria, taking in Venezuelan prisoners is not feasible. We already have our hands full with domestic issues. With a population of 230 million, it is unrealistic to expect us to absorb deportees from American prisons. Ironically, the same people urging us to accept them would later criticise us for doing so.”

Tuggar’s comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump met with leaders of five West African countries—Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal—at the White House on Wednesday, pointedly excluding Nigeria. That same day, Trump announced a 10 per cent tariff on Nigerian goods entering the U.S., a move widely believed to be retaliatory following Tinubu’s alignment with BRICS.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria also adjusted its visa policy, reducing Nigerian visa validity from five-year multiple entry to single-entry three-month visas.

Tuggar, however, dismissed suggestions that these actions were directly tied to Nigeria’s BRICS engagement.

He also expressed concern that the demand to accept Venezuelan deportees could open the door to further impositions. “This could just be the beginning,” he warned. “It would be unreasonable for the U.S. to insist that Nigeria accept 300 Venezuelans—let alone more.”

Addressing the visa issue, Tuggar rejected U.S. claims that the reduction in visa tenure was based on reciprocity.

“That argument doesn’t hold,” he said. “Nigeria has a standard 90-day visa policy, which is in line with what the U.S. offers. The only difference is that we’ve upgraded to electronic visa processing for efficiency, replacing the less effective visa-on-arrival system.”

He clarified that Nigeria still offers five-year multiple entry visas to many U.S. citizens.

“There are different categories of visas,” Tuggar explained. “Some are short-term, like the 90-day tourist visas, but we still issue long-term visas to eligible American travellers. It’s inaccurate to claim that all U.S. citizens are only receiving three-month visas. Our policy is not based on reciprocity, but on functionality and national interest.”
