Supreme Court Has Spoken, But So Will History – Obaseki’s Bold Response to Okpebholo’s Win
Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court’s decision affirming Senator Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected governor of the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Reacting shortly after Thursday’s judgment via a statement on X, Obaseki said he remained thankful to the people of Edo State and Nigerians at large for their unwavering support, insisting that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, were the rightful winners of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
“I am profoundly grateful to the good people of Edo State and Nigerians for their overwhelming support for the victory we believe our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its candidate Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, clearly secured,” Obaseki said.
He noted that the PDP had exhausted all legal channels — from the Election Petition Tribunal to the Court of Appeal, and finally the Supreme Court — based on its strong conviction that the electoral process had been compromised.
“Regrettably, and quite unexpectedly, every court has ruled against us,” he remarked.
While acknowledging the authority of the Supreme Court, Obaseki stressed that the party firmly disagreed with the ruling.
“Even though we strongly disagree with the decision of the Supreme Court, we are bound by it, as believers in the rule of law,” he said.
He, however, warned that the nature of the electoral process and its judicial endorsement posed a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.
“We must sound the alarm that the brazen manipulation of the Edo election — now judicially endorsed — presents a clear and present danger to the survival of our democracy,” Obaseki cautioned.
The former governor ended on a note of resilience and faith.
“As people of faith, we hand this matter over to God, trusting in His perfect timing and justice. I urge our people to remain hopeful and steadfast as we continue in the pursuit to reclaim and rebuild our fatherland,” he concluded.
Earlier that day, the Supreme Court had dismissed Ighodalo’s appeal and upheld Okpebholo’s election. In a unanimous ruling, the five-member panel led by Justice Lawal Garba held that the appellants failed to establish credible evidence of electoral malpractice, including allegations of over-voting and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
The court noted that the PDP candidate had only challenged results from 395 of the 4,519 polling units and called 19 witnesses whose testimonies failed to support the claims.
