LG Polls on Edge: Escorts Banned, Streets Locked Down in Preemptive Police Clampdown
In preparation for the Lagos State local government elections slated for Saturday, July 12, 2025, the Lagos State Police Command has announced a comprehensive restriction on vehicular movement from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The announcement, made in a statement on Wednesday, is part of coordinated efforts with other security and emergency services under the Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), aimed at ensuring a safe and orderly election across the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas.
“This restriction will be strictly enforced across all parts of Lagos State, covering both land and waterways,” said Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.
To maintain the integrity of the process, the police command also banned the presence of armed security escorts at polling units and collation centres. The use of sirens and vehicles with covered number plates has also been prohibited.
Only vehicles involved in essential duties—such as ambulances, fire services, and official patrols by security agencies—will be exempted from the restriction. Other exemptions include medical personnel responding to emergencies, accredited LASIEC officials, election observers, and journalists with valid LASIEC tags.
The police warned that individuals found violating the restriction without proper identification will be apprehended and prosecuted in line with the Electoral Act.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, called on Lagosians to conduct themselves peacefully and cooperate with law enforcement officers during the election. “We urge residents to display patriotism and civility while carrying out their civic responsibilities,” he said.
The command issued a stern warning to would-be disruptors, including political thugs and miscreants, stating that any attempt to disturb the peace at polling units or collation centres would be met with the full force of the law.
Parents and political leaders were also advised to caution their wards and members against engaging in violence or any form of electoral misconduct.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious movements or incidents to the police via emergency hotlines.
The police assured the public of its unwavering commitment to protecting voters and ensuring a peaceful, secure, and credible election across Lagos State.
