Global Shame: Presidency Admits Nigeria Trails Only One Country in Malnutrition
According to NIVONEWS, Nigeria has been ranked as the second most malnourished country globally and the most malnourished in Africa, a revelation made by Uju Anwukah, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Public Health. Anwukah, who spoke on the topic “Strengthening Nutrition Coordination in Nigeria through the N-774 Initiative,” said the Tinubu administration launched the programme as a strategic grassroots response to the deepening malnutrition crisis in the country. “Nigeria is facing a critical malnutrition emergency, ranking first in Africa and second worldwide for child malnutrition. This calls for urgent and coordinated interventions,” she said. She warned that the country loses over $1.5 billion annually due to malnutrition, which undermines its human capital development and overall progress. According to NIVONEWS, Anwukah described the issue as a national emergency requiring the collaboration of all tiers of government and partners across various sectors. Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Chike Okafor, explained that the summit was convened to develop concrete solutions to Nigeria’s worsening nutrition and food security situation. He noted that food insecurity is further compounded by post-harvest losses estimated at $2 billion annually by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)—a figure that dwarfs the combined annual budgets for nutrition across the Ministries of Agriculture, Health, Education, and Women Affairs. “This level of loss is both unacceptable and unsustainable, especially in today’s austere economic environment,” Okafor said. He stressed that his committee is working in synergy with stakeholders across the 36 states to adopt new, more effective strategies. According to NIVONEWS, the lawmaker revealed that the National Assembly is currently conducting strategic capacity-building initiatives to deepen understanding of the complexities surrounding nutrition and food security in Nigeria. He expressed optimism that with the support of the National Institute for Democratic and Legislative Studies and development partners, these initiatives would soon be institutionalised. “Our aim is not just to increase funding for nutrition, but to ensure we get more nutrition outcomes for every naira spent,” he concluded, adding that with coordinated oversight, collaboration with international partners like the UN and World Bank, and a revitalised national strategy, Nigeria can begin to reverse its alarming malnutrition rankings.
