According to NIVONEWS, the Federal Government has officially commenced Phase Seven of mass trials for terrorism suspects at the Kainji detention facility, marking another major step in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Office of the National Security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA), on Wednesday in Abuja.
Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, National Coordinator of the NCTC, described the ongoing trials as a bold reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to justice, transparency, and the rule of law in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. He noted the collaborative convergence of the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, legal experts, and both local and international partners in pursuit of a common goal.
“These trials are more than just legal proceedings—they are foundational to our national resolve to address terrorism within a lawful and rights-based framework,” he said. According to NIVONEWS, Laka also highlighted recent progress in Nigeria’s criminal justice capacity, especially regarding terrorism-related prosecutions, which he said have been instrumental in addressing issues raised by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
He emphasized that the successes recorded have significantly advanced Nigeria’s efforts to exit the FATF Grey List. Laka expressed gratitude to the federal government, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Minister of Justice, and the Federal High Court justices for their professionalism and dedication. He also commended international partners, investigators, and legal personnel whose support has been vital to the process.
According to NIVONEWS, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), represented at the event by the Director of Public Prosecution, Mohammed Babadoko, lauded the Office of the National Security Adviser and its partners for their coordination. He reaffirmed the government’s unwavering determination to ensure justice is delivered fairly to both victims and accused persons, while maintaining adherence to human rights and the rule of law.
According to NIVONEWS, the Phase Seven trials are being closely watched as a barometer of Nigeria’s evolving legal response to terrorism and its broader effort to restore national and international confidence in its justice system.
