“Beyond Black Gold: The Untapped Trillions Beneath Nigeria’s Soil”

Published

on

Nigeria’s vast coastline remains one of Africa’s most spectacular yet underutilised assets. Stretching from Lagos to Cross River, it harbours immense untapped potential—natural capital that, if strategically harnessed, could rival oil in economic importance. But in a nation deeply tethered to petroleum revenue, this invaluable resource continues to be overshadowed by insecurity, bureaucratic inertia, and a chronic lack of innovation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to NIVONEWS, smaller African countries like Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania—despite having significantly shorter coastlines—have developed thriving beach tourism economies that rake in billions of dollars annually. Nigeria, with West Africa’s longest sand beach and a rich cultural mosaic, remains curiously absent from this narrative. It’s a paradox: a nation blessed with the raw materials of global tourism success, yet consistently unable to convert promise into performance.

This isn’t for lack of ambition. The once-celebrated Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort in Calabar stands today as a sobering reminder. Once envisioned as a transformative project, Tinapa’s slow decay—brought on by insecurity, poor governance, and waning investor confidence—is emblematic of Nigeria’s structural dilemma: not a shortage of vision, but a lack of sustained execution.

Yet, a rare opportunity is emerging at the intersection of security and development. Under Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force has begun investing in maritime security—commissioning 31 operational gunboats and partnering with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council. According to NIVONEWS, this signals a much-needed shift: that securing Nigeria’s waterways isn’t just a naval or maritime regulatory concern—it’s a core economic strategy.

Historically, maritime security in Nigeria has been fragmented. The Navy and NIMASA patrol the high seas, but the coastal communities—where crime often originates—have been left vulnerable. With its unique land-sea jurisdiction, the police are well positioned to fill this gap and provide a security framework that can unlock long-stalled investments in the coastal economy.

The implications for tourism are enormous. Coastal insecurity—particularly in the Niger Delta—fuels perceptions of danger that scare away investors and visitors alike. Amplified by poor road networks and weak enforcement, the result is devastating: jobs are lost, local economies stagnate, and Nigeria continues to depend on oil’s volatile fortunes.

But tourism is far from a luxury—it’s a proven growth driver. Dubai’s pivot from oil to tourism shows what is possible. If properly secured and marketed, Nigeria’s coastline could become home to booming segments like ecotourism, wellness retreats, and cultural heritage attractions.

Achieving this will require cross-sector coordination. Ministries of Tourism, Marine and Blue Economy, and the Police must jointly design a national strategy anchored in law enforcement reform, infrastructure investment, and community engagement. A dedicated inter-agency tourism security task force would be a step in the right direction.

Equally important is private sector collaboration. Nigeria must welcome public-private partnerships that inject not only capital but also technical and operational expertise. Firms like Tanita Security Services, already operating in high-risk areas, could be vital in supporting government capacity.

As NIVONEWS notes, the 2025 International Tourism Day offers a golden opportunity to unveil such a vision—to signal seriousness, attract investors, and position Nigeria as a credible tourism destination.

Ultimately, the challenge is not one of potential but of political will. The federal government must show that it sees tourism as central to economic diversification, not an afterthought. The gains—from job creation to foreign exchange earnings and reduced overdependence on oil—are simply too great to ignore.

Nigeria’s coastal wealth is real. What it needs is not just protection from pirates or polluters, but from institutional neglect. Empowered, better-equipped, and strategically aligned with development goals, the police could help chart a new course—where tourism is no longer a wasted opportunity but a foundation of national prosperity.

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared its intention to present a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This comes despite Wike’s open endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election, as well as his recent comments suggesting the party may struggle to fund a nationwide presidential campaign.

However, speaking in an interview, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, dismissed claims that the party would not field a candidate, insisting that preparations are ongoing.

He said the party’s National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Monday will address key issues such as zoning arrangements and nomination fees.

According to him, “We are going to have a presidential candidate. The NEC will decide the zoning formula. Our goal is to win the election and take power from the APC.”

Responding to questions about Wike’s support for President Tinubu, he argued that the minister was speaking in his personal capacity and not on behalf of the PDP.

He stressed that there is a clear separation between Wike’s role as a federal appointee and his status within the party, adding that the PDP’s decisions rest with its leadership structures.

Outrage As Lagos Clears Police Officers, Developer In Owode Onirin Deaths.

Published

on

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice has released four police officers and a developer, Abiodun Ariori, who were accused in connection with the killing of six traders in the Owode Onirin area of Kosofe, Lagos State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The decision followed legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which concluded that the officers acted in self-defence during a mob attack.

In the advice signed by DPP Babajide Martins, the office stated that investigators failed to provide sufficient evidence, including autopsy and ballistic reports, to support criminal charges such as manslaughter.

It further stated that available facts did not clearly link the suspects to the deaths, while noting that the officers were acting to protect themselves during the chaos. The DPP also said the developer was not physically present at the scene when the incident occurred.

The incident reportedly happened during the enforcement of a disputed court order over a land area occupied by traders, which later turned violent and led to the deaths.

However, the Nigeria Police Force disagreed with the legal advice, insisting that autopsy and ballistic findings were strong enough to prosecute the suspects.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, who represents the victims’ families, said the case is not over, adding that additional evidence would be submitted to the DPP while also pursuing compensation through a civil suit.
