“2015 Was Buhari’s Show! Mustapha Credits Ex-President’s Popularity For APC’s Triumph”
According to NIVONEWS, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has credited the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s 2015 electoral triumph over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the overwhelming political clout of former President Muhammadu Buhari and the grassroots appeal of his former party, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Wednesday at the public unveiling of “According to The President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesman Experience”—a memoir authored by former presidential aide Garba Shehu—Mustapha downplayed suggestions that then-ACN leader and current President Bola Tinubu was the driving force behind the APC’s victory. Instead, he insisted Buhari was the unifying figure who gave the opposition coalition credibility and a solid voter base.
According to NIVONEWS, Mustapha explained that even though the CPC controlled only one state at the time of the APC merger in 2013, Buhari’s massive followership was the decisive factor. “Let’s not stir controversy,” he said. “The 2013 merger was primarily driven to actualise a Buhari presidency. While the ACN had six states and the ANPP three, Buhari’s personal vote bank—recorded consistently from 2003 to 2011—brought in over 12 million votes. What the rest of us added post-merger was only about three million.”
He backed his claims with data from past elections: “In 2003, Buhari polled 2.7 million votes; in 2007, 6.6 million; and in 2011, 12.2 million. In 2015, the APC’s winning tally was 15.4 million—proof that Buhari’s loyal base formed the electoral bedrock of that victory.”
President Bola Tinubu, who was represented at the book launch by the current SGF, Senator George Akume, praised Garba Shehu’s work as a definitive record of the Buhari administration’s philosophy and achievements. He said the memoir chronicled a legacy of integrity, prudent governance, and national renewal under Buhari’s stewardship.
“Garba Shehu has not just told a story,” Akume noted. “He has preserved a legacy that highlights Buhari’s principled leadership—marked by fiscal discipline, infrastructural expansion, and a clear commitment to reforming the public sector.”
According to NIVONEWS, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the event, also commended Shehu for producing what he called an “invaluable and compelling” body of work. The former leader said the book provides both historical insight and documentation of a presidency that made bold efforts to reposition Nigeria on multiple fronts—from economic diversification to agricultural revival and social investment.
According to NIVONEWS, the event was widely attended by political elites, signaling a renewed debate over who truly carried the APC to its historic 2015 victory—Buhari, Tinubu, or the combined weight of both.
