The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called on the Katsina State Government to establish dedicated budget lines for children’s health, education, and nutrition, warning that current funding structures fail to address the dire challenges facing the state’s youngest citizens.
According to NIVONEWS, the call was made on Tuesday by Mr. Rahama Farah, Chief of UNICEF’s Kano Field Office, during a media dialogue on child-sensitive budgeting held at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina. He noted that children’s needs are often buried within broader sectoral budgets, making it difficult to track spending and ensure accountability.
Farah revealed that the state’s social sector budget has witnessed a sharp decline—from 38.57 per cent in 2016 to just 12.98 per cent in 2020—undermining efforts to address critical child welfare issues. According to NIVONEWS, he emphasised that approximately 75.5 per cent of children in Katsina are classified as multidimensionally poor, lacking access to essential services like education, healthcare, and adequate nutrition.
“One in every six children in Katsina dies before the age of five,” Farah said, describing the statistic as a sobering reminder of the urgent need to strengthen child-focused interventions.
Highlighting the consequences of underinvestment, he explained: “Only 41 per cent of children are fully immunised, three in four are multidimensionally poor, and over half suffer from stunted growth due to chronic malnutrition. These gaps threaten not just the well-being of individual children, but also Katsina’s long-term economic and human capital development.”
According to NIVONEWS, Farah stressed that budgeting and planning must intentionally prioritise children, who make up more than half of Katsina State’s population. He warned that continued neglect will leave children exposed to exploitation, violence, and potential recruitment by criminal networks.
“Investing in our children isn’t charity—it’s strategic,” he said. “Ensuring that they have access to nutrition, education, and healthcare is the most effective way for Katsina to secure its future.”
