In an interview with ARISE News on Wednesday, Mohammed-Baba dismissed the coalition as “dead on arrival,” citing a lack of vision and overemphasis on personalities instead of a clear, actionable policy roadmap.
He lamented that rather than outlining concrete plans to revive national institutions, fix the economy, and foster inclusion, the coalition’s promoters appear more preoccupied with political positioning and personal ambitions.
Mohammed-Baba argued that the focus on individuals—such as who becomes president, senate president, or SGF—was déjà vu, a repeat of past political misadventures in Nigeria. “If it’s all about personalities, then they’re dead on arrival,” he declared.
He further noted that the infiltration of the coalition by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as alleged by some stakeholders, mirrors Nigeria’s long history of unstable alliances and defections, dating from the First Republic to 2011, 2015, and 2023.
“Some of the key figures pushing this coalition have been hopping from one party to another for over 16 years,” he said. “So the current developments are not surprising, especially given the nature of our politics and the personalities involved.”
He added that there have been ongoing efforts, both subtle and overt, to pressure politicians into abandoning their ambitions or defecting to the APC—tactics that, he said, have undermined genuine coalition-building.
Mohammed-Baba stressed the urgent need for the coalition to present a coherent ideological and policy framework rather than recycle the same liberal democratic and neoliberal economic templates. “Almost all parties in Nigeria share the same ideology. That’s the problem—no alternative thinking, no ideological depth.”
He concluded by expressing hope that the coalition might evolve into something meaningful, but for now, he doesn’t see anything tangible to inspire confidence
