The honorary degree was awarded on Saturday during the university’s third combined convocation ceremony, where four distinguished Nigerians were recognised. Other honorees included the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate; House of Representatives member, Hon. Abubakar Bichi; and the Africa Director of the MacArthur Foundation, Dr. Kole Shettima.
According to a statement from Senator Kalu’s media office on Monday, the Vice-Chancellor of FUK, Professor Umar Pate, explained that the award was in recognition of Kalu’s notable contributions to national development, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy.
Professor Pate described Senator Kalu as an outstanding personality whose influence extends across Nigeria’s political and economic spheres.
“Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a two-term governor of Abia State and currently a distinguished senator, has consistently exhibited exceptional leadership and service to humanity. His legacy in business and national politics makes him a deserving recipient of this esteemed honour,” Pate stated.
The Vice-Chancellor also praised Kalu’s accomplishments as a pioneer in the media industry, noting how his ventures have shaped the country’s media and communication space. He further applauded Kalu’s philanthropy, which he said has empowered communities, promoted unity, and fostered national integration.
“Our decision to honour Senator Kalu is well-founded—based on merit and the demonstrable impact of his leadership, enterprise, generosity, and patriotism,” Pate noted, emphasizing that the university’s Governing Council selected all recipients through a rigorous and thoughtful process.
During the ceremony—which drew dignitaries from across the country—Prof. Pate reiterated the university’s commitment to celebrating excellence as a way to motivate students and the younger generation.
“We use moments like this to inspire our students to emulate the values of hard work, innovation, and national service embodied by these distinguished Nigerians,” he added.
In his acceptance remarks, Senator Kalu expressed gratitude for the honour:
“I am deeply humbled to receive this Doctor of Science degree from the Federal University of Kashere. I sincerely thank the Senate and Governing Council for acknowledging my modest contributions to national progress, entrepreneurship, leadership, and service. I congratulate my fellow honourees on their well-deserved recognition.”
Kalu also extended appreciation to Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for the warm reception and to Senator Danjuma Goje for his presence at the event.
“My visit to the Jewel of the Savannah has been truly rewarding,” he concluded.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
