Cartons of Cash! Smugglers Caught with $420,000 at Kano Airport
According to NIVONEWS, operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have intercepted a cache of undeclared foreign currencies totaling over $420,000 at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano. The seizure, which also included pounds sterling and CFA francs, was disclosed during a press briefing held on Tuesday at the Customs House in Bompai.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar of the Kano/Jigawa Area Command revealed that the interception followed actionable intelligence and a coordinated clearance operation by Customs officers at the airport. He said the primary suspect, identified as Ahmed Salisu and traveling on a Ghanaian passport, was flagged after arriving from Saudi Arabia aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight.
“Like every arriving passenger, Salisu was reminded of the legal requirement to declare any foreign currency exceeding $10,000,” Abubakar stated. However, a physical search of his baggage revealed foreign currencies concealed within cartons of clothing, including $420,900, £5,825, 3.9 million West African CFA Francs, and 224,000 Central African CFA Francs—altogether valued at ₦653.9 million.
According to NIVONEWS, three suspects in connection with the seizure were immediately handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for thorough investigation. The Customs boss emphasized that the arrest underscores growing synergy between the NCS, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in safeguarding Nigeria’s financial system from illicit cash flows.
An EFCC representative, who also addressed journalists at the briefing, confirmed the handover and said the suspects would be prosecuted under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
According to NIVONEWS, the case has sparked renewed concerns about illicit cross-border currency trafficking and the urgent need for tighter airport surveillance in the fight against financial crimes.
