BREAKING: FG Denies Nuclear Weapons Ambition, Says ‘Not on Our Radar’
Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday reaffirmed Nigeria’s firm stance against the pursuit of nuclear weapons, declaring that the country has no intention of developing or exploring nuclear weapons technology.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Shettima made the statement while receiving Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering support for a comprehensive ban on nuclear testing, stressing that Africa’s focus should remain on solving urgent development challenges such as poverty eradication and climate change mitigation, rather than engaging in nuclear arms advancement.
“There’s no victory in a nuclear conflict—it’s always a loss for all humanity,” Shettima said. “We are currently fighting a battle against poverty and addressing the critical link between our economy and the environment in sub-Saharan Africa. We have absolutely no reason or interest in pursuing nuclear weapons.”
He commended the CTBTO for its vigilance and global coverage, noting that the organisation’s 337 monitoring stations worldwide had successfully detected all seven nuclear tests conducted by North Korea (DPRK).
Shettima also highlighted the civilian applications of CTBTO’s monitoring systems, which help in detecting natural disasters such as tsunamis and volcanic or seismic activities, thus contributing to global ecological stability.
CTBTO Commends Nigeria’s Global Role
Earlier, Dr. Floyd praised Nigeria’s leadership under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for strengthening international efforts to prevent nuclear testing and reinforcing global norms against it.
He described Nigeria as a natural strategic partner to the CTBTO, citing its meaningful engagement through national institutions such as the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA).
Floyd acknowledged Nigeria’s valuable technical contributions and commitment to the CTBTO’s mission. He emphasized the life-saving importance of data generated by Nigeria’s focal institutions, especially in detecting environmental risks and monitoring activities that threaten ecological balance.
Nigerian Agencies Affirm Commitment
Speaking at the meeting, Acting Chairman of NAEC, Anthony Ekedegwa, noted that Nigeria’s partnership with the CTBTO has been pivotal in capacity building and technical development within the country’s nuclear energy sector.
Similarly, Dr. Yau Idris, Director-General of the NNRA, emphasized the NNRA’s collaboration with the CTBTO in enforcing global nuclear safety standards and ensuring international compliance with nuclear testing bans.
The visit reaffirmed Nigeria’s role as a leading voice in nuclear non-proliferation, while spotlighting the strategic importance of CTBTO partnerships in enhancing national resilience, disaster preparedness, and ecological stability.
