Sokoto Sets Tough Condition: No Negotiation With Turji Until Kidnapped Victims Are Released
The Security Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor, Col. Usman’s statement came in response to an audio message circulating on social media in which Turji expressed readiness for peace and encouraged other bandit leaders to pursue dialogue.
While recognising the message as a potentially positive shift in efforts to restore peace in the region, Usman maintained that the Sokoto State Government would assess such claims based on verifiable actions, not mere words.
“If Turji truly wants peace, he must demonstrate it by halting all violent activities and releasing innocent hostages in his custody,” he said.
The retired colonel stressed that the protection and welfare of rural communities remain paramount to Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration, adding that genuine dialogue cannot proceed while violence and abductions persist.
“There can be no real peace talks while people live in fear and captivity. Trust is built through deliberate actions, not declarations,” Usman emphasised.
He reiterated the government’s openness to any credible peace initiative that could end the region’s insecurity but warned that criminal activity would not be excused under any pretext.
Usman also called on community leaders, religious authorities, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at securing lasting peace.
He urged Turji and his collaborators to embrace the opportunity for true reconciliation and nonviolence.
“This is a moment to end the suffering—and it should start with the unconditional release of all abducted persons,” he concluded.
