No Hiding Place: Boko Haram Commanders’ ‘Wives’ Trapped in Flight

Security operatives have apprehended at least nine women believed to be wives of top Boko Haram commanders as they attempted to flee from the notorious Alawa forest in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State to border communities in Kebbi State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to NIVONEWS, at least nine women suspected to be wives of senior Boko Haram commanders have been intercepted and arrested by security operatives in two separate operations across Tegina and Agwara towns in Niger State.

The arrests reportedly followed orders from their husbands—top operatives loyal to the Mallam Sadiku-led faction of Boko Haram—amid intensifying military operations in the Alawa forest and a deepening rivalry with the Dogo Gide terror network.

Three of the women were apprehended on Friday in Tegina, a town previously rocked by the mass abduction of over 100 Islamiya schoolchildren in 2021. Witnesses said the group, believed to have boarded a commercial vehicle from Pandogari or Birnin Gwari, attracted attention after a public altercation.

“A heated argument broke out when one of them, from Kagara, changed her mind about continuing the journey. She insisted on staying in Tegina, which led to a commotion that drew the attention of locals and police,” a source recounted.

The women were taken into custody and reportedly confessed to being directed by their Boko Haram husbands to relocate to border communities in Kebbi State. One of them disclosed that more women were en route.

The following day, security personnel intercepted six additional women in Agwara, a border town also in Niger State. Five of the women were carrying infants, and the sixth was said to be heavily pregnant.

Among those arrested was a woman from Alawa, a community overtaken by insurgents after military forces were dislodged. A relative confirmed she had been missing since February 14, 2024, when she and 24 others were kidnapped while traveling to a local market.

“She was among those abducted that day. I can’t speak to her condition at this point, but she remains in police custody,” the family member said.

The Sadiku-led Boko Haram cell, once a dormant faction hiding in the Alawa forest reserve, has reportedly expanded its influence by recruiting—sometimes coercively—fighters from Gbagyi communities in Shiroro Local Government Area.

Some known cases include:

  • Zainab, kidnapped at age 17 in 2021, forced into marriage with commander Muhammad Kabeer.

  • Mary, married to a Boko Haram leader named Ismail.

  • Two girls both named Azeema, married to insurgents Mallam Shafi’i and Suleiman.

  • Khadija, forcibly wed to a fighter known as Umar.

The insurgents and their families reportedly reside in zinc-roofed makeshift camps scattered across Kugu, Maganda, and Dogon Fili regions within the forest. These encampments also host informal Islamic schools believed to be centres for extremist indoctrination.

Authorities continue to investigate the women’s links to the terror network, and further arrests may follow as intelligence operations expand across the region.
