Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Stakeholders Meeting held in Benin City on Saturday, Governor Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State highlighted the region’s political journey and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to expanding its development-driven agenda across Nigeria.
“We have come with an alabaster of endorsements,” Otu declared, “and we are pouring it generously and unreservedly on our dear Captain of the Progressives—the Jagaban of Africa.”
Reflecting on Cross River’s early alignment with the APC in a region traditionally dominated by opposition parties, Governor Otu acknowledged that the state once felt politically “orphaned,” but remained confident in the vision it had embraced.
“We overcame that isolation with the firm belief that we had made an informed choice—hope was indeed on the horizon,” he remarked.
He praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership under the Renewed Hope Agenda, crediting his administration with restoring investor confidence and bringing stability to Nigeria’s macroeconomic landscape.
Otu cited key milestones such as the removal of fuel subsidies, the harmonization of exchange rates, the growth of external reserves to $40 billion, and a $13.17 billion trade surplus as concrete signs of national progress.
The governor also applauded several people-centered initiatives, including the student loan program, expanded consumer credit access, tariff waivers on essential goods, and enhanced agricultural incentives, which he said were helping to ease economic pressures and boost productivity.
“Our emphasis on infrastructure, economic expansion, and social welfare is firmly on track,” Otu concluded. “The progress we’re making across sectors is both bold and sustainable.”

The Bangbola Oyewo family of the Ese-Ola Royal House remembered him as a beloved family man, traditional leader, and an inspiration to generations of theatre practitioners.
